What is the difference between your composite and the composite I buy from the hardware store?Green Shield offers composite decking that has NO wood filler. No matter what anyone says, having wood in your board will lead to natural decay. Our proprietary rice hull blend naturally repels water, insects, and is not susceptible to mold/rot or warping. Most "Big Box" composite is composed of "wood thermoplastic" with minimal capping, minimal warranty coverage, and favors low pricing over longevity. Because Green Shield supports its decks for 25 years we only use top tier fully capped no wood full warrantied materials. Get started on your dream deck today.
-
How do I clean my composite decking?Green Shields composite decks are almost zero maintenance. Use a gentle mixture of soap and water to clean your deck. We recommend that you do not use abrasive materials when cleaning your deck. Most composite is constructed with thin low quality capping that has to be carefully cleaned or it may scratch. Green Shield capping is constructed with Ultra High Density Molecular Resin which is similar to what "Bullet Proof" vests are constructed of. In 3rd party tests they were up to 8 times more resistant to scratching than leading top tier composite boards from competitors. Visit our composite deck care page for more details.
-
Why is composite better than wood?Green Shields composite is designed from our proprietary rice hull blend, which means we do not put any wood into our boards. Wood is susceptible to rot, mold, insects, water damage and more due to its nature and how it was created. Our rice hull blend technology repels water, and is not susceptible to rot, mold, insects, and warping. Learn more about the difference of a Green Shield deck here!
-
How well does the decking actually block heat?Green Shields composite utilizes heat blocking technology that significantly reduces how much heat the boards absorb. This technology helps keep your feet (and your pets!) from burning all summer long. Any material will heat up in direct sunlight; with that being said, TruNorth's patented “Heat Blocking Technology” is the most advanced technology available today in the market. 3rd party testing against leading competitors found an average temperature difference of over 20 degrees fahrenheit, basically the difference between a hot tub and a pool. Green Shield has done in-house testing with heat lamps and found the TruNorth boards up to 70 degrees lower than other leading competitors.
-
Can I use your composite decking for my dock in the water?Green Shields composite decking is made with their proprietary rice hull blend, which naturally propels water – making it the best material for your dock, or for around your pool! Our boards have even been completely submerged in water for years. Learn more about how well our decks do with water here.
-
What type of testing has been done on your composite boards?Green Shields composite decking has been through various testing related to strength, water resistance, and more. View full testing details here.
-
Does your composite contain any wood?Green Shields composite decking does not contain wood. Our proprietary rice hull blend has been specially engineered to perform better than wood. Learn more about our composite.

What is the lifetime value of your decking boards? The ROI (return on investment) of a Green Shield Deck is huge. The composition of the board is vastly superior to other composite boards in the marketplace replacing mold susceptible reclaimed wood with rice hulls which naturally fight off both mold & mildew. Our Manufacturer, TruNorth also uses higher quality recycled plastic which is carefully tested to meet strict Canadian quality standards prior to the manufacturing process. With multiple decking options, you can be assured your deck will last as long as your home. Our TruNorth composite has a 25 year warranty and our Clubhouse PVC has a lifetime warranty. With composite decking averaging a 65% ROI, you can rest assured that your project is an investment in your home's value!

Why is composite better than wood? Wood which was treated prior to the year 2000 used a different formula than what is used in treatment today.Your grandfather's deck boards of the 80's & 90's are far superior to what's available today because of the environmental changes forced upon the decking industry. New Decks that used to last 20-40 years are now needing replacement after 8 years. Some composite is not better than wood; for instance wood-thermoplastic composite boards can warp or rot in less than 10 years. We believe that any composite that contains wood anywhere in the board is compromised and won't last against the elements. Green Shield composite boards are fully capped and wood free in order to withstand the power of mother nature.
-
Can I purchase the materials and build the deck myself? At this time, Green Shield only operates as an installer of our decking boards. Our team is all in-house and specially trained to ensure your deck is built safely and with the highest quality.
-
Can I purchase railing and assemble it myself?Green Shield does sell their Vista Railing to the public. But, Aluminum is very expensive and any mistake can damage a portion of material that will cost more than the labor cost incurred hiring a true professional. Cutting aluminum within our strict tolerance guidelines is challenging even for our veteran craftsmen. Contact us to learn more.
-
Can I have a firepit on my Green Shield composite deck?We suggest following the recommendations of the manufacturer for the heater/BBQ. When installed correctly, many propane or natural gas fire features will not pose a problem, but not all brands are made the same, and they may radiate heat onto the decking differently. The more barriers between the decking and the heat source you can achieve, the lower your risk of damaging the decking.
-
Do I need to stain my Green Shield composite deck?Green Shields composite decking requires NO staining. The composite will not warp, chip, or splinter like traditional wood.
-
Can I add a rug to my Green Shield composite deck?Absolutely! We recommend rotating the rug, and cleaning under it regularly to avoid staining.
-
How long does it take for your team to build a deck?Green Shields team works very efficiently, typically project time varies but the average wait for our team to go through our process and permitting is around 2-3 months, once our crew is building your deck you can expect the build portion to only take around a week depending on the size of the project.
-
Will my Green Shield composite deck fade over time, or scratch or stain?Green Shields composite should maintain its charm if it is maintained properly. The boards are extremely durable and high in scratch resistance. We recommend rotating objects on your deck to avoid staining, and washing your deck with soapy water as needed. Our decking is extremely fade resistant. While minimal fading may occur with any decking, our decking is backed by a 25-year fade and stain warranty so you’ll have peace of mind that the color you choose for your deck will retain its good looks for years to come. For more info on what to avoid with your deck, visit our maintenance page here.
-
Are Green Shield decks code compliant?Absolutely, 100% – every deck is inspected within their county.
-
Are Green Shield composite decks fire resistant?Your safety is our top priority. We've designed our products with this in mind. Our standard decking boards possess a Class B flame spread rating, ensuring a high level of fire resistance. In addition, our Clubhouse boards go a step further with a Class A flame spread rating. However, it's important to note that while these ratings indicate improved fire resistance, our products are not entirely fireproof.
-
Can I use Green Shield composite around my pool?Absolutely! Green Shields composite boards are made with a proprietary rice hull blend and repel water! View more about the testing that has been done on our decking boards related to water here.
-
Is Green Shield composite safe for marine life?Yes, Green Shields composite decking is made from 95% recycled materials and contains no toxic chemicals, VOCs, or formaldehyde. Learn more about the sustainability of our decking here.
-
Can I power wash my Green Shield composite deck?We recommend power washing in the spring and fall, or as required. Rice hulls are very hard and power washing will not harm the board. Power wash using soap detergent and a hose fan spread of 6 inches or more. View our care and maintenance page for more information.
-
Can I use rock salt or melt ice on my Green Shield composite deck? For dealing with snow on your deck, use a leaf blower for light snow and a plastic shovel for heavier snowfall, always shoveling parallel to the deck boards to prevent scratching. Avoid using sand or salt/ash mixtures for ice removal, instead opt for calcium chloride or magnesium chloride-based "ice melt" or rock salt, and promptly remove any residues to avoid staining - a quick rinse with water or a light scrub with a non-metal deck brush should do the trick. Learn more tips on snow and your deck on our maintenance page.
